Common Issues

• ​Isolation

• Lack of information

• Relationship difficulties

• Leaving home too early

• Fear of their future responsibilities

• Deficit in engagement with adults

• Compensatory parenting

• Need to be perfect

• Missed diagnosis and lack of needs being met

• Long Term Pressures

• CHAOS Syndrome - can't have anyone over to house

• Guild - like survivor guilt

• Grief

• Reactions of others

• Missing out, not just FOMO

• Fear of socialising

• Stigma at school due to an older sibling

Helpful Plans

• Giving as much information as is age appropriate

• Have a will and succession plan and let your child know you have it sorted (let them know what their level of responsibility will be to reduce fear and anxiety for the future)

• Have long term goals in the NDIS plan and include siblings in the planning process where possible

• Schedule time for siblings, not negotiable

• Look after yourself

• Get good support

• Get help to advocate

• Hook into supports for siblings

• Push it if you have to

• Get monthly respite so you have TIME

• Have an alternative place for them to go

• Help them to do play dates outside of the house

• Get them assessed if required

Little Dreamers

Non-for profit organisation to support young carers. Little Dreamers work with young people who provide unpaid care for a family member with a disability, illness or addiction across a range of direct support programs, including the Dream Experience (a special day for the young carer that they have been wanting to do but haven't had a chance to do showing them that they are important too); holiday programs; case management; and much more.
